Tips in Buying Thongs and Underwears

What to Look For
Fabric One of the most important things to look for when shopping is the fabric. This will have a huge role in how comfortable the underwear is and how long it will last. Let’s look at the different fabric options:

Cotton
  • 100% cotton is soft and durable
  • offers excellent breathability and is highly absorbent
Blends
  • can be cotton with added Lycra or spandex for stretch and recovery, to maintain shape
  • panties with 2-8% Lycra or spandex can also work a bit like control-top pantyhose; may help tuck in the tummy
  • cotton and polyester
  • blended or more synthetic fabrics may come with cotton gusset for breathability
Synthetic
  • some can be all polyester or nylon
  • generally less expensive than microfiber
  • not as durable as cotton
  • don’t breathe well and can trap moisture
  • but smoothness of fabric can prevent clothing from clinging
Microfibers
  • fine, silky, soft and synthetic yarns
  • are supposed to help improve comfort, fit and style
  • some are considered "performance" fabrics, such as Coolmax, which offer more high tech moisture control
  • popular fabric choice for panties that are seamless or promise no panty-lines
  • generally cost more than cotton panties
Fit It’s also important to get the right fit – who wants to be tugging at their underwear all day long! Here are some things to keep in mind when selecting your new underwear:
  • sizes vary greatly and there is no industry standard, so what may fit you in one brand, may not in another
  • in general, a 5 is small, a 6 is medium and a 7 is large
  • to determine your size according to manufacturers’ charts, measure yourself before you go shopping
  • measure around the fullest part or your hip, making sure the tape measure remains level all the way around
  • measure your waist, placing the tape measure around the natural indentation of your body
  • it is okay to try ‘em on; just make sure it’s over top of your existing underwear or nylons
Fast Fact

Half of women surveyed say they waste money by buying underwear that doesn’t fit and is so uncomfortable that it is abandoned to the back of the drawer. (source: ShoppingBags.com)
